What is Special Smiles Award?

Special Smiles is an oral health programme that helps schools improve the oral health of their children.
It involves supervised toothbrushing to help reduce the risk of gum disease and dental decay, promoting healthy outcomes for all.

What we offer

We work closely with the oral health promotion team through Derbyshire NHS. Which supports us with providing the toothbrushes, toothpaste and racks to store them safely. They also provide necessary staff training, the loaning of resources to teach about oral health and offer support to families where needed.
In school we offer daily toothbrushing in every class, which is supported by our staff team. We promote oral health benefits throughout the year include raising awareness during national smile month or on world oral health day.

In the future

We have now completed our Gold award which we are very proud of and are going to start working towards Platinum. We are now able to offer facilities to recycle your old toothbrushes through a Terracycle scheme, in line with the hope of becoming an Eco-Friendly school.

We will also look at improving and offering more healthy snacks as well as supporting families with visiting the dentist.
