We are proud to be an incredibly active school, offering a wide range of physical activities to support the well-being and development of all our students. Our fantastic new facilities include a spacious hall and an outdoor multi-use games area (MUGA), providing a variety of opportunities for physical engagement and learning. Our commitment to providing a wide range of physical activities ensures that every student, regardless of their abilities or needs, has the opportunity to engage, develop, and enjoy physical activity in a supportive and inclusive environment

Activities We Offer Include:

  • Swimming: Our very own hydrotherapy pool and sessions at the local leisure centre.
  • Rebound Therapy: Specialised trampoline therapy, tailored to the needs of our students.
  • Differentiated PE Lessons: Tailored to individual needs, ensuring all students can participate.
  • Sherborne Movement Sessions: A therapeutic approach to movement and communication.
  • Lunchtime and Enrichment Clubs: A range of physical activities to engage students beyond the classroom.
  • Festivals and Competitions: Opportunities to participate in inter-school events and countywide competitions.

Swimming at Alfreton Leisure Centre

We offer weekly swimming lessons at Alfreton Leisure Centre, where pupils enjoy a 30-minute taught session with expert Derbyshire County Council swimming teachers. Supported by our school staff, the sessions focus on building water confidence, teaching essential water safety skills, and introducing basic swimming techniques. Our students make significant progress, with many showing excellent development week on week.

Rebound Therapy

We are fortunate to have our very own rebound trampoline at school, available to students with support from trained staff. Rebound therapy offers numerous benefits, particularly for students with sensory processing challenges or physical disabilities, improving coordination, balance, and overall well-being.

Horse Riding

We are also thrilled to offer horse riding sessions as part of our provision. Horse riding can have numerous benefits, including improved coordination, balance, and confidence, while also offering therapeutic opportunities for emotional regulation and social interaction. This activity is carefully tailored to meet the needs of our students, and the positive effects are often seen in other areas of their learning and development.

Motor Activity Training Program (MATP)

We offer the Motor Activity Training Program (MATP), designed to help students with physical or learning disabilities develop essential motor skills, coordination, and confidence through individualised, adapted activities. MATP ensures that every student can engage in physical activity, regardless of their abilities, and is a key part of our inclusive approach to physical education, empowering students to reach their full potential.

Duke of Edinburgh award (DofE)

We offer students the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award, a program that promotes personal growth, teamwork, and leadership. Through activities like volunteering, physical exercise, and adventurous expeditions, students build confidence, resilience, and valuable life skills. Whether completing bronze, silver, or gold levels, our students are supported by dedicated staff, helping them achieve their full potential while creating lasting memories.

Festivals and Competitions

We work closely with the Amber Valley School Sports Partnership (AVSSP) to provide a range of festivals and competitions. Events such as athletics, multi-sports, futsal, boccia, and indoor rowing allow our pupils to take part in friendly, competitive environments. We also organize MOVE Days and collaborate with local special schools to provide a diverse and inclusive PE curriculum for all students.

External Providers and Specialist Activities

Our partnerships with external organisations bring even more exciting opportunities for our students. We have worked with Lord’s Taverners through Derbyshire County Cricket Club, offering table cricket sessions that lead to competitions throughout the school year. AVSSP also offers a variety of sessions, including rowing, martial arts, and dodgeball.

Additionally, we work with AVSSP to organise exciting whole-school activities like Ozzy’s Obstacle Course and Tough Mudder-style challenges, encouraging teamwork and resilience. Our staff also benefit from professional development through CPD sessions with AVSSP.

Outdoor Education and Adventures

We are lucky to have two nearby outdoor education centres—Lea Green and Thornbridge Outdoors—which offer a range of exciting outdoor activities such as low ropes, high ropes, zip lines, and other adventurous pursuits. Every class has the opportunity to take part in these exciting experiences at least once per academic year, providing students with the chance to challenge themselves and build confidence in an outdoor setting.

Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

The sport premium grant is an Olympic legacy fund that aims to increase the quantity and quality of the volunteer workforce supporting and developing the school games.

As a school we are lucky to receive sports premium funding from the Department for Education. Physical Development and Physical Education are fundamental parts of our curriculum offer.

The school utilises the funding in line with the Department for Education Guidance, which is to;

•    Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities

•    Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

We also ensure that a thorough action plan has been taken out to include the 5 key indicators which are;

•    Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity

•    Profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement

•    Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

•    Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

•    Increased participation in competitive sport

For how we adopt these 5 key indicators in our school, please see the sports premium document or for further information please contact, Marie McCuaig or Katie Turner.
